FLEGT Permits Fully Digital from May 1, 2025

As of May 1, 2025, the process for handling FLEGT permits will become fully digital. The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA), in collaboration with the European Commission and the Indonesian government, is transitioning to a fully digital FLEGT permit system.

What does this mean for you as an importer?

If you import goods that require a FLEGT permit — such as timber, paper, or wooden furniture from Indonesia — you will no longer need to submit physical (paper) permits to the NVWA.

Instead:

  • You will enter the required permit data via the CLIENT import system

  • Initially, this can still be based on a paper permit

  • Later, you will receive and use a fully digital permit from your importer

The rest of the customs declaration and import process remains unchanged. Any paper permits already on their way will still be processed as usual.
